Why is called a “Grandfather Clock”?

We’ve all seen one… usually in a stately home. They’re tall, wooden and usually ticking away.  The first person to ever build one wasn’t a grandfather (at least that can be proven).  Why it’s called a “Grandfather” clock may surprise you.
