(via Mental Floss) On July 17, 1902, Willis Haviland Carrier finished drawing up plans for what is today considered the first modern air conditioning system. It was installed in a printing business in Brooklyn in 1903, and in 1906, Carrier patented a refined version, called “Apparatus for Treating Air.” Though Carrier is often called the father of air conditioning, his system wasn’t the first system—and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
