Robert Smalls: The Slave Who Stole a Confederate Warship and Became a Congressman

(via mental_floss) Robert Smalls was an enslaved African American who, during and after the American Civil War, gained freedom and became a ship’s pilot, sea captain and congressman  from South Carolina.  He was a folk hero whose accomplishments were backed up with fact.
