In the past, these castles belonged to either nobility or royalty, but over time, whether through war, debt, or donation, they have passed out of their ownership. This pattern of loss accelerated from 1700 onward, as agricultural estates became less profitable over the course of the Industrial Revolution, leading to the long-term loss of wealth by the landowning class.
