Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo is now just over six months into the new job. Today she took a step back in time to Rome Catholic School, where she coached the Lady Redwings basketball team and carved out a legacy that landed her in the Rome Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2015. She played there as a member of the class of 1979, then, as head coach, led the team to a 230-86 record in a decorated 15-year span that included three undefeated seasons. During her time behind the bench, the Redwings held a 43-game home winning streak, a 36-game league winning streak and a 73 percent winning percentage. Her resume included eight league championships, a sectional championship, a regional championship and a state Final Four appearance. In 2015 she was elected mayor of Rome making her the first woman in Rome’s history to hold that position. 2:00 pm ( Sentinel photo by John Clifford)
